Vampires and zombies

In today's pop culture there seems to be an obsession with vampires and zombies. They fill our movie theaters and our TV screens. Stories of their existence are not new, so what seems to be the appeal right now? To be a vampire or a zombie, you must first become a victim. Then to survive it is critical that you prey on other victims. We associate this state as relinquishing your humanity and becoming part of a colony of emotionless beings. Once you have entered into this realm there is a disconnect from the nobler, more civilized part of you. You surrender your ability to love and care for others. There is no sense of family or friends. The only action that will end your suffering is with a stake through the heart or some other violent end. Perhaps our fascination with these two groups is that it is a reflection of where we could be heading when we disconnect from others. It reminds us of what we would sacrifice if we walk down this road. Have you noticed that only those characters who maintain the capacity for love and compassion are the ones that survive as humans? An interesting premise to consider. What would you do today to ensure that you are maintaining that nobler part of humanity that would prevent the vampires and zombies from claiming their victims?
