Fact or fiction?
We are constantly interpreting the information that our brain receives. We depend on our sensory system to provide data on the world around us. We base what is factual on whether or not it is confirmed by our senses. Yet what we are reporting as factual based on this information is only true for each individual. I recently was visiting San Francisco. I was wearing a sweater and a heavy coat and my senses were still telling me I was cold. That was a fact for me. I observed a number of people dressed in shorts and t-shirts walking throught he streets as if it was a summer day. That was the fact for them. Was I right and they were wrong? This shows the subjectivity of what we consider to be fact. The story that I would make up about myself and the people I observed on this day would be fiction. I would have no way of confirming what they were actually experiencing as they walked. Even if they told me directly, it would be their version of what was happening for them. This is important when we make judgments about others based on our own beliefs. We are quick to pass judgment without considering what others' experience of the world is. We use our own "facts" and create what is often a fictional account of what the other person is doing. We are each here to walk our own path and be aware that others are doing the same whatever that may look like. Keep the focus on yourself and what you are doing to make a positive difference in the world around you. That will become your fact in the moment. How are you separating out fact from fiction today?
