Quiet resignation
About a week ago I heard that the liquid amber trees in front of my condo unit were scheduled to be removed. Their roots were damaging the sidewalks by raising up sections creating an uneven walkway. Their seeds were also problematic because of their shape and size, easy to sprain an ankle if stepped upon. At the time I heard of their removal I didn't give much more thought to it. When I saw the green signs taped to each of the trees as I walked this morning, the entire process took on a different meaning. Each green sign represented a death sentence and the execution date was posted for next week. What was their crime? All they had done was provide shade and grow according to their nature. Now after many years of giving service, they stood silently ready to meet their fate. I feel a sense of sadness in their quiet resignation. But they are only trees some people would say. Perhaps that is true. I have learned that all things both living and nonliving are connected in some manner. What is important is that their passing will not go unnoticed and I will miss their presence along the street. What do you notice about the world around you and your connection to it?
