Across the miles
Through the miracles of modern technology we are able to communicate with others across the globe in real time. For many of us the thought of such an event seemed to be in the realm of science fiction when we first heard it discussed as a possibility years ago. Today we take it for granted as we "skype" across the miles. I have watched our friends' son grow up in Germany through our bimonthly visits. What is most fascinating about this modern marvel is that we are only interacting with an image of those on the screen. Yet our feelings and reactions are just as real as if the person was sitting across from us in our living room. Our brain does not discriminate in its interpretation of what we are seeing. It allows us to experience the moment as if we were all together in physical form. That is probably why our friends' two year old extends his hand to try to pet the dog through the screen. For their son this is commonplace. The miles that supposedly exist between us evaporate. We wonder what will be created next to bring us closer to those who are important to us yet so far away in distance. This form of connection began with an idea that manifested into this everyday convenience much like the computer I am using to compose this blog. With one stroke to publish this entry, the message becomes instantly available to billions of people. We live in wondrous times and will continue to be amazed by how our thoughts will take form to influence how we live each day. What device are you grateful for today that makes life easier and more fun for you?
