Bridging the generation gap
Having been born in the late 40s, I fall into the category of the Baby Boomer generation. The generational niche we occupy is characterized by specific events and traits. We often find ourselves subconsciously demonstrating those traits to provide evidence that our generation acts and thinks in a certain manner. Consequently we may form judgments about those outside our generation. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with those in what is referred to as Gen Y or Millennials. In doing so I see the passion that these young people bring to what they do. Through their exposure to technology and social media they have the tools to communicate with large numbers of people instantaneously and without questioning their ability to do so. When I focus on how we are more alike than different, the gaps between us dissolve. They were never really there to begin with, artificially created to define who we are and what we do. This requires that I remain open at the top to how we can work together. I have so much faith in where our future is headed based on what I see in these young people. Generations before them have passed on challenges that they will have to solve to benefit the generations yet to come. Just as each generation before has done. When we focus on the greater good, we all benefit. What are you doing to bridge the generation gap today for a better tomorrow?
