Can'ts and Won'ts
When making a decision consider two words: can't and won't. We tend to use them interchangeably yet they are different in meaning and intent. Can't implies the inability to do something usually based on circumstances. "I can't (an inability) pay my rent because I have been unemployed for five months." Won't connotes a conscious refusal to take an action based on one's beliefs, attitudes, and values. "I won't (a refusal) be seeing you anymore. This relationship is what I was hoping for." It is when we insert "can't" into our statement when "won't" is what we really mean that we run into problems. "I can't fire that employee because I need his skills even though he is costing the company thousands of dollars with his errors." You have the ability to fire him, you just refuse to do so. This is where you need to take responsibility for the meaning and intent of your statement. In doing so you are clearer in your decision. Will your next decision be based on a can't or a won't?
