Thank a teacher
I spoke to one of my former students who was assigned to my classroom almost 40 years ago. She is now married with children of her own. I was present at her wedding and at the christening of her first son. As we talked about what is happening in her life, she told me that she believed I was perfectly timed as her teacher. She shared what her life was like outside the classroom and how important it was that I taught her to be confident and assertive. As we talked on the telephone I could hear evidence of those characteristics. I felt so proud of her and what she has accomplished in raising her two sons now teenagers especially since she is blind. At the time I did not think that I was treating any of my students with special consideration. In my eyes I was just doing my job. I have been blessed with similar conversations with other former students all of whom have visual impairments. We never know when the good that we do will come back to us. All we do is what is in front of us hoping that it will somehow make a difference in the life of someone we touch. Today's call reminded me to think back on a person who has significantly affected me and to offer a silent thank you to that individual. Who would you choose to thank today and why?
